I'm not quite ready to go to my new home.

Mya

I'm in the Recovery Room - I'll Be Available Soon

That’s some serious side eye – and rightfully so, because Mya’s foster mom was getting too camera-happy for her liking. After having eight teeth removed and a liver biopsy, Mya was looking forward to getting comfy in her bed. Instead, her foster mom insisted she change into her recovery suit, eat a few bites of food, take some meds and then smile for the camera (after all, her fans want to know how she’s doing!). Thankfully, she was able to snuggle in for the rest of the evening.

There have been some serious concerns with Mya’s health, so prioritizing her essential care has been tricky. Testing has diagnosed Cushing’s disease, but she displays none of the typical symptoms. Her liver enzymes are elevated, but an abdominal ultrasound showed no abnormalities in her liver. Her eye pressures have been inconsistent, and her teeth are in bad shape. On top of that, she has a mast cell tumour (MCT).

Our goal is to make Mya as comfortable as possible, as quickly as possible, so addressing her painful mouth was our first priority. We also needed to investigate the cause of her consistently increasing liver enzyme levels, so a liver biopsy was performed, and we are awaiting the results. Next month, Mya will have ten more teeth removed, and depending on the biopsy results and her vet’s recommendation, she may also need to have her left eye and/or the MCT removed.

Mya’s vet bills have already exceeded $4,000. She was left in a shelter as a senior, and we are determined to have her live her golden years happily, comfortably and with the best medical care possible. We are committed to giving Mya the life she deserves, but we need your help. Please consider donating to her care:

At 14 years of age, Mya shows incredible resiliency, spunk and a zest for life. She’s ready for all that her new BTRC journey has to offer. Mya is truly an inspiring little lady. She did, however, want to add, that she could do without the annoying recovery suit, though she must admit, purple is her colour!

Mya is being fostered in Oakville, ON and is not yet ready for adoption.

Dearest Thomas,

Enclosed you will find a picture of me. I thought it would be a nice gesture to help us get to know each other better. I am not one for technology as I feel a paw-written letter is a timeless way to communicate.

I hear that you have been with BTRC for some time, and you are part of the esteemed “Set for Life” program. That is quite the status! Rumour has it that they don’t make those decisions lightly, so you must be very special.

I was intrigued when I heard my foster mother talking about you. She said that you were very handsome and that you were full of personality – except now I think the young pups call it “spicy.” I am a quiet lady, so I feel like an enthusiastic lad like yourself would be a great complement to me.

Thank you for sending your picture. Though I can’t see it, my foster mother described it in great detail, and I am most definitely intrigued!

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Yours Truly,

Mya

Mya is filing a formal complaint!

Foster Mya is less than impressed. She feels that her probation period has ended, and she should be given leniency when it comes to house rules – especially if they involve human food!

Though Mya is blind, her nose will always lead her to the goods. When her foster parents were enjoying a slice of pizza one evening, Mya voiced her displeasure at their unwillingness to share.  She decided to call in reinforcements and asked her foster sister to engage in a stare down – the humans were sure to crack right? Wrong! Can you believe it? STILL NO PIZZA! So, the sisters decided that their parents’ punishment was an evening filled with extreme stink eye – because four stink eyes are more powerful than just two!

Mya, it looks like doggie treats are going to be your only delicacy, so you might just have to get used to them. Rumour has it that all previous fosters have approved these healthy snacks, so they can’t be that bad.

Mya is being fostered in Halton Region, Ontario and is not yet ready for adoption.

Welcome to our first intake of 2025 – Mya!

BTRC was alerted to a 14-year-old dog who was recently surrendered to a shelter. Blind and terrified, we knew we needed to get Mya out of the shelter and into a foster home.

Upon arrival, Mya eagerly sniffed her way around the house and settled in a nice fluffy bed. Later that evening, she had a deep sleep in the human bed nestled between her foster parents – she knew she was safe. ♥

Mya has already seen a vet and while we are waiting on her blood, urine and fecal test results, her exam confirmed she has mature cataracts and significant dental disease. A fine needle aspiration was performed on a mass on her chest to determine if it’s a mast cell tumour and we are also waiting on the pathologist’s report. The good news is that her lungs and heart are strong.  Once we have all the necessary information, we can move forward to ensure Mya receives the care and support she needs.

So far, Mya has been the perfect houseguest. She gets along beautifully with her BT foster sister, takes her eye drops with no issue and is the queen of the signature BT bum wiggle when her humans come home. Her foster mom says, “She’s the most gentle, loving and easy dog I have ever cared for. The way she navigates the house, you’d never know she’s blind. She’s just amazing.”

We look forward to getting to know more about this sweet senior and will update you soon.
