Maizey is a three-year-old French Bulldog mix with a big personality, an even bigger heart, and a special little swagger all her own.
This beautiful girl came to rescue with some neurological challenges that affect her back legs and cause urinary incontinence. She wears stylish diapers like the fashion icon she is and doesn’t let any of it slow her down. To Maizey, they’re just another part of her wardrobe and a small part of what makes her uniquely wonderful.
Specialists have advised that surgery is unlikely to improve her day-to-day function. Maizey did complete a month-long steroid trial to see if reducing inflammation would improve her mobility, but she remained stable without any significant changes. So the goal for Maizey is management and helping her live her very best life. She thrives with a few simple accommodations, including avoiding stairs and jumping, and she’s looking for a family who will embrace her exactly as she is.
What Maizey lacks in athleticism, she more than makes up for in charm.
Maizey enjoys a wonderful balance of adventure and relaxation. She loves going for walks, although she’s not always convinced it’s the best idea when the weather isn’t cooperating! She’s an excellent traveller and happily rides in the car whether she’s heading to the trailer, visiting friends, or making a trip to the vet, where everyone absolutely adores her.
Maizey is also a big fan of sunshine, relaxing outdoors, and even taking a dip in the lake. She approaches life with confidence and firmly believes that anywhere she visits instantly becomes her territory. Visitors may need to pass a brief security check (no worries – she allows you to keep your belt and your shoes on), but once approved, you’re welcomed into Maizey’s inner circle.
In foster care, Maizey has shown herself to be a happy, easy-going companion. She has been comfortable observing other dogs and may do well with a calm canine friend, but she would also be perfectly happy soaking up all the attention as an only dog. She has not been tested with cats.
Maizey is crated when left alone, as she has a mischievous side and will happily investigate any food left within reach – including treasures found in the garbage or compost bin! She settles well in her crate and has never shown signs of separation anxiety. When her people are home, she prefers neighbourhood watch duties from the window, followed by a well-earned nap.
When playtime rolls around, Maizey is far more interested in people than toys. Belly rubs are always appreciated, and cuddling is one of her greatest talents. She sleeps soundly through the night and is equally happy in her crate or tucked under the covers in bed with her people. Sleeping in is highly encouraged, according to Maizey.
When it comes to meals, Maizey enjoys her breakfast and dinner and never says no to a tasty treat.
Maizey is fully vetted, microchipped, and ready to find a family that will love her for the funny, affectionate, resilient little girl she is. Her ideal home will understand her medical needs, appreciate her quirky personality, and be ready for plenty of cuddles, companionship, and laughter.

Who says beach bodies have to be perfect? Maizey certainly doesn’t!
Sunshine, sandy paws, and a good sniff along the shoreline? That’s a pretty perfect day in Maizey’s books.
Lucky for Maizey, her foster dad has a little getaway on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, giving her plenty of opportunities to cool her paws, splash around, or take a proper swim if the spirit moves her.
And while some dogs pack a bathing suit for the beach, Maizey prefers the au naturel approach. According to her, it’s a nude beach... diaper optional.
Back at the trailer, Maizey takes full advantage of all the usual perks of vacation life – leisurely walks, sunshine, treats, friendly visitors, and a very important role in chipmunk surveillance from her observation post on the deck.
Maizey embraces every adventure with enthusiasm, confidence, and the kind of joy that reminds us all to appreciate the simple things.

BTRC foster Maizey is having a fashion dilemma – she doesn’t know which hat suits her most! She has a very special outing with her foster dad, and she wants to look her best.
For a girl who regularly rocks diapers, Maizey knows a thing or two about making functional fashion look pretty darn fabulous…but today’s big question is all about the hat!
Which one would you choose for this adorable little lady?

When Maizey came to BTRC, all we knew about her health was that she had neurological concerns that affected her back legs and bladder. We wanted to get answers to fully understand Maizey’s needs, so we booked an ultrasound and MRI.
Fortunately, Maizey’s ultrasound was normal. However, the MRI confirmed Spinal Arachnoid Diverticulum (SAD), a buildup of fluid along her spine, causing compression of the spinal cord. Findings also included a congenital vertebral malformation and thickened vertebrae. This means she was born with bones in her spine that didn’t form typically, and some are denser or thicker than normal.
Maizey completed a trial of steroids to see if reducing inflammation and fluid buildup would help. After a full month on medication, she remained stable but showed no real improvement. The steroids also increased her thirst and urination – not exactly ideal for a girl who already spends much of her time in diapers – so the decision was made to slowly wean her off them.
While surgery can be the right choice for some dogs, it was not recommended for Maizey. Even with invasive spinal surgery, it’s unlikely her day-to-day symptoms would improve.
For Maizey, the focus is lifelong management: keeping her comfortable, happy, and mobile. That may include physiotherapy to help strengthen her back legs, a prescription urinary diet, and yes – diapers. On the bright side, her foster dad reports that since coming off the steroids, diaper changes have become much less frequent!
Her future family will need to be open to managing and understanding her needs, and in return, she will give them unconditional love. Her foster dad says she is the absolute sweetest, and she is living a full life – it’s trailer time after all – and Maizey loves a good vacation. ❤️

This sweet three-year-old girl is Maizey. And while she may not be a Boston Terrier, when a dog is facing potential neurological challenges, waiting is not an option. So, we stepped in to help, and Maizey’s now being spoiled rotten in her foster home. ❤️
Maizey has already had her first vet appointment, where it was confirmed that she’s not fully using her hind legs and she’s lost some control of her bladder. A neurology appointment has been scheduled for next week, so we can better understand what’s going on and how to support her moving forward.
We’ll continue to share updates as we learn more about Maizey’s condition – please send positive vibes her way! Right now, Maizey’s only concern is how many snuggles she can get and how to make them last as long as possible. (Her foster dad describes her as an absolute sweetheart, so he’s more than willing to participate!)
