I'm ready for my new family!

Romeo 1

I'm Available

Romeo is ready to steal your heart!

If you’re looking for a playful, cuddly companion who will shower you with love, look no further than Romeo! At two years old, this handsome boy is bursting with energy and affection. Whether he’s chasing after a ball, basking in the sun, or simply snuggling up for a cuddle, Romeo is always ready to brighten your day.

What makes Romeo special?

  • Energetic & Playful: Romeo loves to be active, whether it’s going for walks or enjoying a fun game with his humans. He’s the perfect buddy for someone who enjoys outdoor adventures or a good play session.
  • Cuddly & Lovable: When it’s time to wind down, Romeo is all about those cozy moments. He’s a snuggler at heart and will curl up beside you for some quality bonding time. He’s equally happy to sleep in your bed or in his crate.
  • He’s a Foodie: This little guy has a taste for the finer things – especially red peppers and cucumbers! He’s always up to join you for a snack break (though he might try to sneak a bite of your veggies).
  • Sun Lover: Romeo enjoys car rides, especially to the trailer, where he can bask in the sun and soak up the warmth. If you’ve got a sunny spot at home, he’ll claim it as his own personal sunbathing spot.
  • People-Oriented: Romeo adores all people and is quick to make friends. He thrives on attention and affection from his humans. His big heart and excitement at seeing people (new and old) sometimes make him forget his manners, and he’s been known to be overzealous in his greetings. Though he can be redirected easily, he’s best suited for an adult-only home or one with dog-savvy children who are sturdy on their feet.
  • Crate and House Trained: Romeo doesn’t mind being left in a crate when his humans leave the home but prefers to snooze on the couch waiting for their return. He’s not destructive when left unattended.
  • Trickster Extraordinaire: Romeo is a quick learner. During his time in foster care, he’s learned sit, down, stay/wait, leave it/drop it, and shake a paw – and he’d love to expand his repertoire!

A Few More Things…

  • No Other Critters, Please: Romeo isn’t quite ready to share the spotlight with another dog. He’d be happiest as the one-and-only pet, where he can soak up all the love and attention. Romeo has never lived with cats but he does exhibit a high prey drive with yard critters. He is strangely wary of feathers, so a home with a bird might make him nervous (as do toys with feathers).
  • Continued Training: Romeo has worked hard with his foster parents and professional trainer to be the best boy he can be. He tugs on the leash at the start of a walk, but this quickly subsides (and his front clip harness helps). He can pull when he sees something of interest, like a squirrel or, more notably, another dog. Romeo’s reactivity is still a work in progress, but he’s responded well to clicker training. When he sees another animal, his foster dad clicks, Romeo sits, waits for a treat, and they move on. There are still times when Romeo needs to be redirected by walking in a different direction. Romeo’s future family should be committed to continuing engage/disengage techniques. A guide from his trainer will be provided to support his development.
  • Health and Wellness: Romeo is up to date on all of his vaccines and has received all necessary vet care. He was neutered and had surgery to improve his breathing due to Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which is common in flat-faced dogs. During the procedure, a harmless growth in his airway was also removed. Romeo has a skin condition called parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, meaning he doesn’t absorb zinc properly. This can cause his nose and ears to become rough, crusty, or patchy at times and makes him more susceptible to skin infections. To manage this, he takes a zinc supplement from the drug store ($20 for 3 months) and uses two topical medications, a toning solution (approx. $15 for 2 months) and a veterinary mousse product (approx. $35/month).

Dear Santa Paws,

Woof Woof! It’s me, Romeo, your furry friend from Kitchener. I hope you’re having a pawsome time at the North Pole, surrounded by snow and lots of tasty treats. I’ve been a very good dog this year—well, most of the time! I still get pretty excited when I see other critters, but I am doing my best to get better.

This year, I’ve been doing all the good doggy things: I’ve been wagging my stub a lot, giving lots of kisses, and I always try to chase the ball. I’ve been extra good at taking naps and guarding the house from squirrels, leaves and whatever comes by, so I think I’m on the Nice List.

For Christmas, I would love some new toys—maybe a squeaky one that I can carry around everywhere and immediately destroy! I also heard you might have some tasty treats in your sleigh, and if you have any extra, I wouldn’t mind a little snack! A comfy new bed would be pawsitively perfect too, so I can sleep in style.

I’ll leave out some milk and cookies for you (and maybe a bone, just in case). If you can, please give all the other dogs in the world some belly rubs from me. And don’t forget to pet the reindeer too—they must work so hard!

Thank you for all the joy you bring. Merry Christmas, Santa Paws! I’ll be waiting under the tree with my tail wagging.

Lots of woofs and wagging tails,
Romeo

Romeo is (not) ready to make some waves!

As you know, BTRC foster Romeo is relishing time at his foster parents’ trailer. He can’t get enough of the sun, wildlife and campfire snuggles. Another thing he can’t get enough of is watching videos of fellow Boston Terrier, Thor. Wanting to be like his celebrity crush, Romeo put on his life jacket and headed to the beach.

It turns out, this thing they call water is NOT all it’s cracked up to be – especially the waves. So, his foster dad bought him a kiddie pool to see if calm waters were a preferable way to cool down. It turns out that the only thing Romeo doesn’t mind getting wet is his snout. It is, after all, the only way he can retrieve his beloved toys from the pool!

So, from now on, Romeo prefers to stay dry while getting his swimming fix through the iPad.

Bird watching, bonfires and basking in the sun!

BTRC foster Romeo has been enjoying time at his foster parents’ trailer. A bird-watching aficionado, Romeo has discovered the campground is a great place to observe all kinds of feathered friends.

With the great outdoors also comes animal sightings. Whether it’s a dog or other animal, Romeo is on high alert and has a difficult time redirecting his focus. So, with the help of dog trainer Anji Barton, his foster dad is working hard to help Romeo behave more calmly and appropriately when he encounters a furry creature.

At Romeo's last appointment, the vet was pleased to note that the condition of Romeo's skin had shown marked improvement. Since changing his diet, Romeo has much more hair growth on his ears. The bridge over his nose, which was previously very red, also looks much healthier. Romeo has an appointment scheduled with a dermatologist, but considering how well his skin is doing, he might not even need it! Closer to his appointment, his vet will confirm Romeo’s next steps based on another assessment of his skin.

The cone is off for Romeo!

We are happy to report that Romeo has recovered from his recent cryptorchid neuter and BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) surgery. You might recall that, during the procedure, a growth was found in the back of his throat. This was removed and sent for testing. Fortunately, it was found to be a non-cancerous “fibro mucosal” polyp, and no further treatment is required.

Speaking of removals, Romeo was much more pumped about another one – the removal of his cone! Playtime, mealtime and snuggle time are now even better.

Romeo is an energetic boy and loves his toys – even though they seem to spontaneously combust. It’s common to see Romeo standing in the middle of the room, fluff everywhere, with a look of pride on his face! His enthusiasm is not just for indoor play, however, as this boy likes to walk. He fairs well on a leash, but his curiosity and excitement often get the best of him, so his foster dad is working on how Romeo reacts to animals he encounters on his walks.

As much as Romeo loves to be active, he also appreciates his downtime and enjoys the serenity of his crate and a peaceful nap as he waits for his foster parents to return home. Romeo recently discovered the joys of technology while lounging on the couch with his foster dad—he can’t get enough doggy videos on the iPad!

We feel like Romeo has what it takes to be screen-worthy, too – so we will be sure to update you on this handsome boy soon!

Romeo catches some after-surgery rays...

and some time relaxing in the sunshine is well deserved! Brave Romeo had not one but two surgical procedures on the very same day.

Romeo was a “cryptorchid,” meaning he had one undescended testicle. First, an abdominal ultrasound was performed to determine its exact location. It was also suspected that Romeo would require surgery to improve his breathing, so X-rays were also taken, and an airway examination completed under anesthesia.

Both the neuter and the BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) procedures were completed successfully, and Romeo is recovering nicely. However, the surgeon did discover a cyst in Romeo’s airway, which was sent out for testing. Hopefully, it will be nothing to worry about, and no further treatment will be required.

Though a little unsteady on his feet, Romeo returned home ready for some R&R. Although he was a little bruised and swollen, Romeo’s appetite quickly returned to normal – he wasn’t even phased by the mushy kibble his foster dad served up, required as his throat heals. As he enjoyed the sunny outdoors, Romeo also discovered that his cone was a multifunctional accessory – both wound protector and sun visor!

Total cost of Romeo’s surgeries: $5,657.06

Welcome Romeo!

Romeo has arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day! Though he may have a ‘bad boy’ image, this 11-month-old knows how to work those puppy dog eyes and isn’t afraid to let his sweet side show.

Seriously, of course, Romeo is NOT a bad boy at all. He is, however, in need of some training and socialization that his previous family could not provide, given a lifestyle change that reduced the amount of time they could spend with him. They knew it was best for Romeo to get started on his training while still young, and BTRC was here to help.

It’s early days, so Romeo is still decompressing, and we’re still assessing. He needs to be neutered too. We’ll be updating you on this handsome fellow as we learn more.

Romeo is being fostered in the Peterborough, ON area and is not yet ready for adoption.
