ADOPTABLE NYMERIA

Hi! I’m Nymeria. And no, I’m not a Boston Terrier – I am a warrior princess with a soft heart!

When I came to BTRC, I moved in with my foster mom, dad, and my Pug brother, Gerald. While I was timid and anxious at first, I soon fell in love with fall in the Ottawa Valley and the wonderful family who welcomed me. Long walks along quiet rural paths, chasing milkweed seeds, and epic games of fetch at the local park quickly became my favourite things.

I was used to wearing diapers and using pee pads, but that’s no longer the case. I may still have an occasional accident, but I’m on a special diet (Royal Canin Urinary SO) to support my bladder health. Everything is working just as it should – though because of my R/x diet, I drink lots of water and may need extra potty breaks.

I’m very expressive – I twirl for my meals, leap for treats, and love to show off my signature bottom-teeth smile (or a full grin when I’m really happy!).

Just before my fifth birthday, I faced a big challenge and bravely underwent IVDD surgery. I recovered beautifully and have continued to prove just how strong and resilient I am. I sometimes get a little frustrated about being carried up and down stairs and may take the “scenic route” when called, but when I hear my name, I’m always ready for love. I sometimes try to sneak the occasional couch jump (don’t tell), so doggy stairs to higher places will be a necessary investment. But like my vet says: I’m a dog, and I’m just living my best life. I need a family that  understands my limits and helps me pace myself.

Oh, and I got all the regular vet stuff done too, including a dental, so my breath is minty fresh!

I’m alert when someone comes into the home and may bark to announce visitors, but I’m not much of a guard dog. I prefer to approach new people at my own pace – once I do, I’m happy to roll over for belly rubs and soak up all the compliments about how sweet I am.

Winter means shorter walks while I continue building strength in my back legs, so I play lots of fetch indoors with my Kong (it never lands the same way twice!). Gerald always tries to beat me to it, but I usually win – though sometimes I think he lets me. I’ve also learned the command “leave it”, which makes my foster parents very proud.

My days start slowly (I’m a big fan of sleeping in), followed by breakfast, floor inspections for any missed treats, a few playful laps with Gerald, and then relaxing with a chew. I spend much of my day resting in my cozy crate/bed and do just fine being alone for a few hours.

Evenings are my favourite, especially when supper is being made (just in case something drops!). After dinner, I enjoy snuggling by the fireplace, asking to join the couch for lap time, and finally curling up in the big bed with my family.

Oh, and my name? I’m named after the wolf princess from Game of Thrones. A warrior who has overcome so much…petite, agile, and yes…beautiful. I did have some tense interactions with the other unspayed female Frenchie in my previous home, but I got along with everyone else. Maybe I just like boys best? I do love Gerald! But truth be told, I’m a queen at heart and truly adore human companionship best so I wouldn’t complain if I were the only apple of your eye!

Cats? Apparently, I originally came from a place with lots of them, but my memory is foggy and I’ve not met one since being with BTRC. So maybe a cool, dog-savvy cat?

Could you be my forever family? Yes? Great! Please fill out my adoption application form HERE.

Dear Santa Paws,

I’m with BTRC now, so if you visit my old address, I won’t be there. I know I’m not a Boston Terrier, but when I needed help, BTRC didn’t look at my breed. They looked at me, saw a girl in need and said yes immediately. Feeling seen is a really beautiful feeling, Santa.

This year, I learned how quickly life can change. One moment I was napping, and the next, my legs felt weak, and I was in pain. Thank goodness my foster parents noticed it right away. They didn’t wait. They rushed me to the dogter, and even when the answers were scary, they stayed strong because they knew they had to get me through my IVDD surgery.

Sometimes when things get tough, people give up because it’s just too hard. But Santa, no one gave up on me. BTRC fought for me – not once did anyone ever stop believing that I was worth saving. I’ve never felt more loved.

You know who else loves me? My foster brother Gerald. He’s a pug, and he’s super cute. He’s my protector and my best friend. When I was recovering, he stayed close so I wouldn’t feel alone. I don’t think he knows how much that meant to me.

My foster parents are the kind of people who never ask for thanks. When they’re praised, they brush it off and say it’s just what you do when you love someone. They think it’s nothing, but to me, it's everything. They stay up during the hard nights, lift me when I can’t jump, and they’re even building me a ramp so I can be more independent. They tell me I’m brave, and I hope they know it’s because they are.

Santa, I can honestly say that this last month has been like a Christmas miracle. I didn’t know if I’d be able to walk, and because of a group of volunteers who refused to give up, I went on my very first walk this week, and Mom said I did great. ❤️

I’m grateful for my second chance, Santa. Thank goodness you came early this year. I really needed it.

Love,
Nymeria

Nymeria – Our Brave Warrior

Our sweet foster pup, Nymeria, has had to face a sudden battle we were not expecting. And while it was a lot for her to endure, she’s now recovering and in wonderful hands with her foster family.

Last week, Nymeria’s foster mom noticed something was off. She was restless, weak in her back legs, trembling and struggling to walk. She was immediately admitted to the vet, where specialists suspected a serious spinal condition.

After an MRI, Nymeria was diagnosed with IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), which is a painful condition where discs in the spine compress the spinal cord, causing weakness and nerve damage. If left untreated, it could result in paralysis, and it was determined that surgery was her best option.

Good news – Nymeria’s surgery was successful, and while she still needs to take it easy, the rehab she does with her foster parents shows she’s regaining her strength and coordination. Since being home and under strict instructions to rest, her foster brother, an adorable pug named Gerald, has intuitively understood his BFF needs some gentle TLC. He placed a chewy in her crate to comfort her, and he now sleeps on top of her crate so he can safely be nearby.

Nymeria’s a fighter. She’s so incredibly special, and without hesitation, we ensured she received immediate care. Watching her receive endless snuggles from her foster parents and slowly regain her spark reminds us why we do this work. But the truth is, this has come at a tremendous cost. The consultations, an MRI, surgery, medications, and follow-up care have added up quickly. While we await the final total, the estimate thus far is $15K. We never hesitate to advocate for dogs like Nymeria, but we can’t do it alone.

From Nymeria and all of us at BTRC, thank you for being part of her story. ❤️

Namaste from Nymeria!

This adorable girl has rolled out her yoga mat and is ready for rescue life. She was surrendered just shy of her fifth birthday when her owner could no longer provide the medical care she needed to get to the bottom of some urinary issues. And while Nymeria may not be a Boston Terrier, when we heard about a pup in need, we couldn’t resist saying, “Oui” to this Frenchie.

In her foster home, Nymeria’s been enjoying outdoor adventures and getting along wonderfully with her pug brother, Gerald. Her foster mom has been diligent with potty breaks, and so far, Nymeria has not had any accidents AND her nighttime diaper has been dry! A recent urine test showed that her urine specific gravity (USG) was low, which could indicate kidney issues, so we are following up with more testing.

In the meantime, Nymeria has plans to perfect her downward dog (rumour has it’s the perfect angle for very effective puppy dog eyes that elicit many treats!).

Nymeria is being fostered in Renfrew County and is not yet ready for adoption.
