While we genuinely mourn every Boston Terrier Rescue Canada alum who crosses the rainbow bridge, this loss feels especially poignant. Ludwig was one of the originals – a true OG of BTRC, attending many of our early events when the rescue was still growing from a small core of volunteers into the national community we have today.
Born deaf and rehomed three times because he “didn’t listen,” Ludwig’s story with BTRC began fifteen years ago, when he was eight months old, and became one of resilience, trust, and connection. The night he arrived on his “freedom transport,” his dad recalls, “The volunteer said this guy won’t last long before being adopted. She was right – he was destined to be my sidekick.”
That sidekick role would last a lifetime. Over the years, Ludwig became so much more – a teacher, a mentor, and a constant source of calm strength.
“Ludwig was a role model and teacher for countless fosters, dogs, and people. He was so confident and strong, his eyes so loving, and his soul poured through them.”
His deafness made him unique and deepened the bond he shared with his dad, who learned to communicate with him through energy and hand signals, discovering a language deeper than words.
Together, they built a life filled with nature and companionship. Ludwig joined his dad at work every day, went on long walks along rivers and through forests, and spent quiet moments together in the mountains.
“I couldn’t want anything more than to spend my days with him… melting into his cuddles. The time with Ludwig was perfect.”
Even as his health declined over the past year, Ludwig’s spirit never dimmed. He faced every challenge – lung issues, infections, losing an eye – with his usual courage and grace.
“It didn’t seem to even faze him in the slightest. Those last eight months were such a gift to be able to spend every moment with him and say our goodbye.”
His dad’s devotion never wavered. Their bond shaped the life he lives today.
“Ludwig changed my life. Just being with him brought me peace, fulfillment, and happiness. He would follow me with eyes that only saw me as his hero. Hopefully, I can be half the person he thought I was.”
From the night he found his forever home to his final mountain-top adventure, Ludwig’s life was one of purpose, joy, and love. A deaf dog once given up for “not listening” became the embodiment of what rescue is all about: patience, understanding, and second chances that change lives.
Ludwig didn’t just listen – he taught us all how to hear. ❤️
Run free, sweet boy.
