Smooches - check
Snuggles - check
Snacks - check

This is Layla’s wish list for her perfect forever home, and she’s dreaming of a new family that can check all the boxes.

An absolute love bug, Layha’s perfect day starts with hugs, smooches and snuggles. This sweet senior has nailed down her morning routine which begins when she places her head into your hand and gently paws at you to receive her morning kisses. Her foster mom has never met a doggo who loves smooches quite so much and when she wants to snuggle she will slowly crawl into your lap for some attention.

Layha, at 11 years young, defies her age with a vibrant spirit that shines through her uniquely beautiful brown and white coat. With maturity comes wisdom, so while Layha has her playful side, she is also content to snooze while you work, or relax by your side when it’s time to unwind. She particularly loves basking in the sun on hot days – whether it’s on the grass, in the doggie pool or near the river.

She’s a delightful companion on short strolls, walking politely on leash without pulling (as long as you let her smell every flower!). Meeting new people can make her a bit shy initially, but she warms up with a little time. Layha has shown kindness and patience with children she’s met, though she looks to her family for reassurance in unfamiliar situations. Building her confidence will be key for Layha’s new family, ensuring she continues to flourish in a supportive environment.

Layha, having lived as an only dog for many years, can become upset if another dog approaches her when she has her special bone. Her resource-guarding behaviour has improved since entering rescue and she is adjusting to sharing her space with her rambunctious foster brother. Layha would thrive best in a home with adults or older children who can comprehend and honour her boundaries. We think she would enjoy being the canine companion of a retiree or retired couple who can spoil her with lots of time and snuggles.

Layha is incredibly sweet-natured, easygoing and gets along well with everyone in the household and visitors alike. While she’s a bit cautious around cats, Layha generally does well with feline companions. She has made friends with most dogs she’s encountered, even energetic puppies! Although she does like to snuggle and play with other dogs, if given her preference, we suspect she would choose to share her space with a confident dog with the same calm energy or be the sole canine.

Layha is very food-motivated and an incredibly smart which makes training easy. Since being with BTRC she has learned the word “office”, which means time to go to work with foster momma. She will run into the office on cue and will patiently sit waiting for her snack reward. Layha also knows sit, high-five, gives kisses and has mastered lying down without even trying.

When Layha first came into our care, she experienced accidents in the house due to a serious UTI. Treatment with strong antibiotics was necessary, and after completing the medication, Layha only had a couple accidents in the house. Most recently, with a consistent routine, she has been accident-free. Crate-trained, she will reluctantly go into her kennel while her foster family is running errands or at bedtime but she never makes a fuss about it — her preference is just to be around her family. ❤️

Layha is up to date on all routine vetting, including vaccinations and parasite testing, and is microchipped. She’s had a dental, and a low-grade mast cell tumour removed from her chest. There is no further treatment needed, but as MCTs are not uncommon in the breed, you’ll just need to keep an eye out for any new lumps or bumps. During a recent health check, Layha’s vet did detect a very mild heart murmur that wasn’t heard in previous appointments. It’s graded as 2 out of 6, considered minor, and there’s no need for any treatment or medication at this time. As with all dogs, regular monitoring and routine check-ups will help ensure Layha’s continued health.

Her foster mom tells us that “Layha is such an absolute sweetheart, and it doesn’t take much to make this girl happy. She brings with her an abundance of love and sweetness – all she asks for in return is-smooches, snuggles and snacks and you will have undoubtedly found your best friend ❤️.”

Layha's Surgery Recovery

BTRC foster Layha is recovering from two procedures – a dental and the removal of two masses. She is also on medication to treat a UTI. Layha was understandably a little out of sorts when she got back from the vet, but what confused her most was the absence of her BT foster brothers, Moose and BTRC alum Bertie. Were they not supposed to be waiting, ready to dote on her and carry out her list of recovery demands? Her foster mom tried to explain that it was for her own well-being that she take advantage of some solitude, but Layha remained on high alert waiting for her boys to return home. When they eventually came through the door, she was finally able to relax.

The lump removed from Layha’s mouth was a benign squamous papilloma (commonly referred to as a wart). The second, on her chest, was a mast cell tumour (MCT). Both growths were completely removed. The MCT was low grade, the least aggressive kind, and the chance of it coming back in the same location is slim. Like all dogs with MCTs, Layha will need to be monitored for any new lumps or bumps.

Much to everyone’s delight, all three dogs in the home received a new toy – Layha for her bravery and Bertie and Moose for their moral support. Layha, unlike many BTs, did not destroy her toy. Instead, she carried it proudly around the house to show it off!

Layha typically enjoys the company of other dogs and was very nurturing to a visiting puppy. However, she doesn’t always like to share her human’s affection with them. Her foster mom is working with her to address this behaviour and give Layha the confidence that there is enough love to go around.

Total cost for Layha’s medical procedures and medication: $2882.02

BTRC welcomes lovely little Layha!

Layha just recently arrived to rescue and is now settling into her foster home. She came to BTRC because family members were experiencing worsening allergic reactions to animal dander. Changes in her family’s circumstances also meant they could no longer provide her with the necessary time and attention she deserves. So as difficult as it was, her family decided that BTRC would be the best way for her to find a new home.

11-year-old Layha was a little timid when she first arrived, but her two BT foster brothers and feline foster sister showed her that she was welcome and safe. Though we don’t know much about Layha just yet, we can confirm that definitely loves to cuddle! You will find her snuggled up to her foster parents, squished in a nap bundle with her foster brothers or chilling next to the cat.

Layha has some vet appointments coming up, but for now, she’s getting to know her new environment and soaking up all the cuddles she can!
