Adoptable Edwin!

Edwin is a 10-month-old Boston Terrier who is equal parts lovable, hilarious, and absolute menace.

At just 8 months old, Edwin found himself in a shelter due to behavioural concerns. Given his young age, BTRC knew we needed to step in and give this little guy a fair chance.

Not long after arriving in his experienced foster home, it became clear that many of Edwin’s “behavioural issues” were not rooted in aggression, but rather in being a young, under-socialized Boston Terrier puppy who lacked guidance, structure, and appropriate outlets. Don’t get us wrong – he has certainly kept his foster mom on her toes! Edwin is an exceptionally busy puppy. This goes beyond typical puppy energy; he is constantly on the move and always looking for something to do. Think Energizer Bunny after several shots of espresso.

Because Edwin missed out on important early socialization and training, he has a lot of catching up to do. The good news? He’s an A+ student. His foster mom describes him as incredibly smart, eager to learn, and quick to pick up new skills and routines. He may excel in dog sports such as agility or chase ability. His future family should be committed to continuing his training and providing plenty of mental enrichment and appropriate outlets for his busy brain.

Edwin likely had limited exposure to other dogs before entering rescue and can be selective during initial introductions. With slow, controlled introductions and the right canine companion, however, he is happy to make friends. Once he decides another dog is part of his circle, he loves to play. Like many young dogs, he can be enthusiastic, persistent, and occasionally a bit much for some other dogs.

If Edwin were to live with another dog, they should be calm, patient, playful, and tolerant of his youthful exuberance. His foster home has a steady rotation of dogs coming and going, and while some become instant friends, others require a little more time and management. He generally seems more comfortable with smaller dogs, though he does have some larger canine friends as well. His future family should be prepared to facilitate slow introductions and appropriately manage interactions to ensure everyone feels comfortable and successful.

He was relatively chill with a dog-savvy cat he met, so with slow introductions, appropriate management, and an Edwin-free retreat space if needed, he could likely share his home with a cat.

Like most puppies, Edwin thrives on routine and predictability. He would likely do best in a calm, structured home. Due to his puppy nipping tendencies and high energy level, he is not suited for a home with young children.

While Edwin can be a handful, he is also an incredible companion. He is fully crate trained and settles beautifully overnight and when left alone. He is potty trained, though some regression should be expected during the transition to a new home. He loves cuddling on the couch, enjoys hiking adventures, has made tremendous progress with his recall, and greets every human with joyful enthusiasm. Most of all, Edwin is an absolute clown who will keep you laughing daily.

Neutered, microchipped, heartworm tested, and up to date on vaccinations including DHPP, rabies, Bordetella, Lyme and leptospirosis, Edwin was also noted to have a mild grade 2/6 heart murmur during a recent veterinary exam. While his veterinarian felt it was appropriate to monitor at this time, BTRC would encourage his future family to pursue a cardiology consultation for further evaluation and peace of mind.

Edwin could do well in either an apartment or a house. He currently has access to a yard and spends much of his day sunbathing, zooming through the hostas, entertaining himself – and everyone watching! If his future home doesn’t have a yard, he will need additional walks, enrichment, and outdoor activities to help meet his exercise needs.

Edwin has already made incredible progress in foster care and has so much potential. We can’t wait to see him continue to thrive in a forever home that is committed to his training and able to provide him with the one-on-one attention he deserves.

If you’re dog-savvy and looking for an intelligent, energetic, endlessly entertaining companion who will keep you laughing and keep you on your toes, Edwin just might be your perfect match.

Say Hello to Edwin!

When a shelter reached out about a 10-month-old pup in need of training, we didn’t hesitate – especially because we had a very experienced foster home ready and willing to take him in.

Edwin still has lots of puppy in him – mouthy, curious and a little rambunctious. Thankfully, he’s incredibly eager to please, a quick learner, and his foster mom says he’s already catching on to routines!

Like any young dog, Edwin is still working on some skills – most notably, how to read social cues from other dogs. Lucky for him, he’s hit the jackpot with seasoned foster siblings Azalea, BTRC alum Herb, SFL Stitch, and SFL Mamie showing him the ropes – BTRC style.

Edwin is being fostered in Halifax, NS and is not yet ready for adoption.
