Our sweet foster pup, Nymeria, has had to face a sudden battle we were not expecting. And while it was a lot for her to endure, she’s now recovering and in wonderful hands with her foster family.
Last week, Nymeria’s foster mom noticed something was off. She was restless, weak in her back legs, trembling and struggling to walk. She was immediately admitted to the vet, where specialists suspected a serious spinal condition.
After an MRI, Nymeria was diagnosed with IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease), which is a painful condition where discs in the spine compress the spinal cord, causing weakness and nerve damage. If left untreated, it could result in paralysis, and it was determined that surgery was her best option.
Good news – Nymeria’s surgery was successful, and while she still needs to take it easy, the rehab she does with her foster parents shows she’s regaining her strength and coordination. Since being home and under strict instructions to rest, her foster brother, an adorable pug named Gerald, has intuitively understood his BFF needs some gentle TLC. He placed a chewy in her crate to comfort her, and he now sleeps on top of her crate so he can safely be nearby.
Nymeria’s a fighter. She’s so incredibly special, and without hesitation, we ensured she received immediate care. Watching her receive endless snuggles from her foster parents and slowly regain her spark reminds us why we do this work. But the truth is, this has come at a tremendous cost. The consultations, an MRI, surgery, medications, and follow-up care have added up quickly. While we await the final total, the estimate thus far is $15K. We never hesitate to advocate for dogs like Nymeria, but we can’t do it alone.

This adorable girl has rolled out her yoga mat and is ready for rescue life. She was surrendered just shy of her fifth birthday when her owner could no longer provide the medical care she needed to get to the bottom of some urinary issues. And while Nymeria may not be a Boston Terrier, when we heard about a pup in need, we couldn’t resist saying, “Oui” to this Frenchie.
In her foster home, Nymeria’s been enjoying outdoor adventures and getting along wonderfully with her pug brother, Gerald. Her foster mom has been diligent with potty breaks, and so far, Nymeria has not had any accidents AND her nighttime diaper has been dry! A recent urine test showed that her urine specific gravity (USG) was low, which could indicate kidney issues, so we are following up with more testing.
In the meantime, Nymeria has plans to perfect her downward dog (rumour has it’s the perfect angle for very effective puppy dog eyes that elicit many treats!).
Nymeria is being fostered in Renfrew County and is not yet ready for adoption.
