ADOPT ME! Tikka

Meet the lovely Tikka! This 8-year-old Boston Terrier with a big personality and an even bigger heart is ready to find her forever home. Tikka’s charm is irresistible. Her foster family describes her best:

“Tikka is a big, bold, beautiful BT. Big because she has a huge personality. Bold because she is up for anything. Beautiful because she has that lovely head tilt, perky and floppy ears, tiny underbite, and little tongue peeking out.”

Tikka wakes up every morning with a stretch and a wiggle, ready to greet the day. Breakfast means doughnuts – not the sugary kind, but rather, Tikka doing doughnuts around the room in delight knowing her meal is on its way! After breakfast, Tikka will serenade you with hopeful barks, convinced there might still be a tiny bit more to be had. If she can’t persuade you that more food would be a great idea, she’ll happily settle for morning cuddles and pats instead.

After her morning excitement, the rest of Tikka’s day is spent finding sunbeams to sleep in, watching out the window for people, pets, and wildlife, enjoying leisurely walks in the park or along the river pathway, hanging in the garden, searching for delicious things to eat, and chilling with the cats and her Boston Terrier buddy, BTRC alum Linus. In the evening, Tikka enjoys her dinner, walks, and a cozy couch “cuddle puddle” with all the household pets.  Another endearing quality is that Tikka asks to go to bed in the evening, happy to be tucked into her kennel with a comfy bed, blanket, Benebone, and a few treats for being such a good girl.

Tikka is a social girl who enjoys meeting people and kids during her walks. She’s friendly and polite with adults and children, making her a great companion for families. Tikka does, however, see herself as the guardian of the home, which can present challenges when people come to the door. Thankfully, she has made significant progress with recall, redirection, and being kenneled when necessary to manage this behaviour. With continued training, this should become a minimal issue.

Tikka is a sweetheart at home with her dog and cat companions. However, she requires slow introductions and managed interactions over a few days to develop proper relationships. Any adoptive family with resident pets will need to follow this patient approach to ensure a smooth transition. While Tikka can sometimes be reactive to unfamiliar dogs during walks or visits, this attitude is manageable with simple techniques, such as crossing the street or changing direction. She has shown impressive progress with consistent training.

Loud noises such as fireworks, thunder, or sirens make Tikka nervous, and she may bark in response. She also tends to snack on inappropriate “treasures” she discovers, so supervision is necessary during walks and outdoor time. And don’t worry, Tikka is a great communicator and will use her bark to let you know when she needs to go outside!

Fully house-trained and crate-trained, Tikka knows her basic commands like sit, stay, come, and lay down. Super smart, she’d love to learn more! Tikka adores her spa days and doesn’t mind baths or nail trims.

Tikka has received all necessary routine vet care, including updated vaccinations, parasite testing, and preventive treatments. She’s also had a dental and three masses removed. Two were lipomas (benign fatty tissue) and one was a low-grade mast cell tumour, which was successfully removed with clear margins. Like all dogs of her breed and age, it will just be important to monitor for any new lumps or bumps. Tikka currently has a fatty growth on her leg, but this doesn’t require treatment at present as it isn’t bothering her.

Tikka is doing well on combination diet of Hill’s Prescription Diet Gastrointestinal Biome for digestion and Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Moderate Calorie food, which helps keep her in great shape.

Tikka is looking for a loving home that will continue her training and provide her with the structure she needs. In return, she’ll bring joy, cuddles, and her delightful personality into your life. If you’re ready for a loyal, fun-loving companion, Tikka is waiting to meet you. Don’t miss out on the chance to welcome this special girl into your home! Fill out an application HERE!

Three masses down and Tikka is raring to go!

BTRC Tikka is trying to make the best of her cone after her recent surgery. When she heard her foster mom talking about a soft cone and donut, she immediately started to drool. Whether her mom meant soft serve ice cream or a deliciously glazed cruller, Tikka was ready for her delectable treat! Given she’d been told to lose 4 lbs. and had been carefully watching her diet, a cheat day was just what she felt she deserved. You can imagine her disappointment when her mom put a blue blow-up accessory around her neck and told her it needed to stay put for a while. Since Tikka loves spending time outdoors, she wondered if this ‘donut’ would give her weird tan lines – but does admit, it might serve as a great flotation device for the pool.

The lumps were removed from Tikka’s ear, stomach, and knee. We’ve received the test results, and everything looks good! The lumps on her ear and stomach were low-grade mast cell tumours. These were completely removed, and since these usually don’t spread, the surgery should take care of them. The lump on her knee was a harmless collagen mass, which is common in places that get bumped or rubbed often.

Tikka has not skipped a beat since surgery – her appetite is healthy, her poops have been normal and her energy is high. As for her weight loss plan, Tikka is down two pounds since arriving in foster care which has her vet (and the rest of us) quite pleased!

Cost for Tikka’s mass removals: $1,805.55

Stayin’ cool with Tikka!

BTRC foster Tikka is beating the summer heat! When her foster mom put the kiddie pool in the backyard, she was the first to hop in. Her brother, BTRC alum Linus, was happy to let her enjoy her oasis in solitude, while he remained cool and dry in the shade.

Since coming into foster care, Tikka’s not only learning the joys of lounging in the pool, but she’s also learning to not eat the cat’s food. Another one of Tikka’s preferred yet restricted indulgences – dirt. Though Tikka claims she’s just trying to help her foster mom clean up the garden, she’s been told that dirt needs to stay on the ground. Knowing she has a watchful eye on her, Tikka has turned her attention to dogs treats instead.

Though Tikka and Linus warmed up to each other quickly, Tikka is not as receptive to “outside” dogs. Whether meeting them on walks or when they visit her foster home, she gets very excited and can be vocal. She eventually settles, and her foster mom continues to work on building her confidence and calmness around new dogs.

Tikka has an appointment this week to remove a few masses, so we will update you soon on her recovery!

Estimate for Tikka’s mass removals: $1,921.06.

Tikka has arrived!

BTRC welcomes seven-year-old Tikka – surrendered because her family’s life circumstances changed, and they could no longer provide her with the time and attention they knew she deserved.

So far, Tikka has proven to be a polite houseguest. She is slowly getting acquainted with her feline foster siblings and her new foster brother, BTRC alum Linus. She sleeps soundly in her crate and gets her ears cleaned and nails trimmed with no fuss. Foster brother Linus is not impressed as she is making him look like a Drama King when it’s his turn for some ‘spa treatments’!

Tikka’s foster mom describes her as “beautifully behaved” and a “sweetheart.” We look forward to updating everyone soon on this adorable girl!
